Investing in the Future: Corning Inc. and the Alternative School for Math and Science
By: Derek van Bever and Miho Kubagawa
Abstract
In early 2017, Kim Frock (MBA 1987), founder and administrative head of school for the Alternative School for Math and Science (ASMS) in Corning, New York, is beginning to think through the issue of leadership succession at the school. Founded in close partnership with Corning Inc., which she left to assume her current position, the school fills an important role in the community as a magnet for talented middle school students interested in STEM careers and as a talent attractant for Corning Inc. itself. As the head of school for its first 13 years, Frock wondered what the ideal profile would be for her successor. Was it essential that the person come from Corning? And would candidates from outside Corning find the opportunity appealing? Was the model of close academic partnership and financial support that ASMS and Corning maintained a throwback to the past, or a promising model into the future?
