Empirical research in Operations Management has
managed to move from an orphan existence in the INFORMS journals to creating
one or multiple articles in almost every issue of Management Science and
M&SOM. We developed a database of all empirical research related to
Operations Management in these two journals over the last 20 years. This
database includes over 250 empirical papers. Based on this database, we discuss
a trend in recent work favoring more micro level observations. In particular,
we present a study in which we tracked nurses that were equipped with RFID
devices. This allows us to investigate how nurses move around in the unit and
how the patient location can impact the care they receive.
