Managing Turbulence
Course Number 1224
Turbulence is a common feature of today’s business landscape: wild swings in financial markets, bank runs, global health crises, rapid changes in consumer tastes and societal expectations as well as radical technological breakthroughs create dramatic uncertainty in the lives of most managers. This course asks how to best manage risk and uncertainty in volatile environments. We will study the phenomenon at three levels: strategic, organizational and personal. At a strategic level, we will explore ways to make big decisions when the returns to these decisions are difficult—and occasionally impossible—to anticipate. At an organizational level, we will study the set of choices that facilitate the rapid decision making that is often required during turbulent times. At a personal level, we will focus on communication skills. The course will help build your ability to communicate in turbulent times and share effectively how to make sense of difficult-to-understand business situations and executive decisions.
