James Romberger (American, born 1958), Sale on Ludlow Street, 2000, pastel on paper, 38 x 45 in. Schwartz Art Collection, Harvard Business School, 2001.8.

James Romberger is an American artist and cartoonist known for his depictions of New York’s Lower East Side. His pastel drawings documenting the people and cityscapes of the Lower East Side are in many public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum. He describes this work: "The drawing depicts a hat sale at Amy Dowing's hat shop on the corner of Stanton and Ludlow Streets in the lower East Side of Manhattan. This area is in the middle of a burst of development, filling up with chic cafés and nightclubs. The result of the accelerating rents is that small businesses like this one have gone out of business or have relocated."
