"When cycling in New York City, it is important to keep an eye on the street surface in case of potholes, construction plates, crevices, and debris large and small. More and more, my eye was drawn to the crushed beer and soda cans amongst the detritus. Drained of their contents, discarded, flattened by traffic, the cans nevertheless conveyed their messages of desirability. Considering that in the big-time beverage market 'image is everything' (to paraphrase an advertising slogan) this may not be so suprising. Still, the cans provide a great readymade point of departure (think of advertising, disposability, recycling, etc.), and also make an interesting painting surface."—Dan Ford
