In dialogue with Claude Monet’s series of paintings of water lilies at Giverny, these two photographs by Spencer Finch explore, in his words, the artist’s attempt to try “to capture something—a place, a moment, an impression, a light condition,” and the “impossibility of doing so.” For Finch, it is “the impossibility of representation, the impossibility of communication, the impossibility of making art to a certain degree,” that is intriguing.
