"My experience of New York City had always been a hodgepodge of breathless hustle, gritty energy, and endless intrusiveness. I knew about private clubs, but was completely unaware of how central they are in the history, cultural fabric, and vitality of the city. Each club offers a palpable atmosphere, each as different as a group of bibliophiles might be from a gathering of entertainers. My pictures try to delineate those differences in order to fully describe what I now understand to be a quintessential, albeit particular New York institution."—Jim Dow
