Ellen Brooks

White Crepe, 2002

Ellen Brooks (American, born 1946), White Crepe, 2002, Lambda print, 60 x 48 7/8 in. Schwartz Art Collection, Harvard Business School, 2004.5.

In her series, Constructed Comfort: Fort/House,” Brooks builds and then photographs sheltering environments, such as tents and forts. In this work, she shifts her focus from the constructions themselves to views looking out from within the structures. The resulting image is meant to be ambiguous—cotton batting might appear to be snow; wooden dowels could be twigs, branches, or tent posts.
