Homage to Monet, 1989

Sally Apfelbaum (American, born 1954), Homage to Monet, 1989, archival pigment print, 40 x 30 in. Schwartz Art Collection, Harvard Business School, 2000.3.

This photograph was made while Apfelbaum was an artist-in-residence at the Monet Museum in Giverny, France. Apfelbaum describes her process: “These images are made up of multiple exposures. They were made using a compass, combining north, south, east, and west views on a single negative…. The garden in Giverny is beautiful, full of historic resonance and constant change. I worked in the evenings when the garden was closed…[and] returned to the same places over and over, watching the light and changes.”
