Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

Jennifer Tom

Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman. As a child, I recall watching my adored superheroes day after day as they saved the world without fail. The more I watched, the more I dreamed of having my own superpowers. I told myself that if I just waited patiently, my powers would one day develop.

Although I still cannot move faster than a speeding bullet or leap even short buildings in a single bound, I have found my own way of fighting that will help save Earth from disaster. Wielding my business education and health policy background, I will go forth to improve global health initiatives in countries worldwide. I too can save the world.

While I have not fought mad scientists or supervillains from outer space, I have begun to battle evil. This past year I worked in Haiti and Rwanda to contribute to Partners In Health's fight against poverty and disease, two of the world's greatest enemies.

My superpowers have indeed developed. They are just a little different from those of typical superheroes. I may not yet be able to fly, but for the rest of my life, I will use my powers to battle evil. It is a hefty goal to save the universe, but hey, a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do.
