Abstract
The US shift to a service economy that accelerated in the 60's, is nearing
its limits. A second shift that is in mid flight is that from a material to an
information economy. At the intersection of these two trends is the largest part
of the US economy: information services. We are also in the middle of a process
of globalization and industrialization of services, that is raising question
ranging from policy issues related to labor to sector changes, to issues of
competitiveness for US firms. We outline these major trends and their
consequences, and describe the impact on specific sectors and industries with
examples from sectors such as health care, media/entertainment, and financial
services.
