HBS Faculty Teaching Seminar

2009-2010

The Faculty Teaching Seminar is open to START 2009, START 2008 and START 2007 faculty. All sessions will take place from noon to 1:30pm in Baker Library 102. Lunch will be provided. Specific dates and topics are listed below.

For many sessions, the center develops short cases or selects readings which will be distributed in advance of each session

Session 1: Tuesday, September 8

Preparing to Teach

This session explores a range of preparation challenges for HBS faculty relating to content, process, the section relationship, teaching groups, state of mind, and professional/personal life balance.

Session 2: Tuesday, October 6

Questioning, Listening and Responding

In this session we explore the three invaluable teaching skills of questioning, listening and responding, through classroom video clips featuring a diverse mix of HBS faculty.

Session 3: Tuesday, November 3

Openings and Cold Calls

In this session we look at the importance the beginning of class has in setting the tone of the case discussion, using video clips and frameworks to think about openings and cold call strategies.

Session 4: Tuesday, December 1

Transitions and Closings

This session explores the different approaches for transitioning between pastures in class discussions and effective ways to close a class. We will use video clips and frameworks to explore different strategies for these two important elements for managing a case discussion.

Session 5: Tuesday, February 2

Teaching Groups

In this session we use a case discussion to explore the dynamics of the HBS Teaching Group and think about different approaches and strategies for enhancing Teaching Group effectiveness.

Session 6: Tuesday, March 2

Managing Participation and Feedback

This session explores strategies for effective and efficient tracking of student participation and student feedback meetings with a discussion of the one-page case "How Am I Doing?"

Session 7: Tuesday, April 6

Challenging Moments in the Classroom

In this session we use a case discussion to explore best practices and approaches for responding to difficult, and often unexpected, dilemmas or provocations in the classroom.

Session 8: Tuesday, May 4

Assessment and Grading

The session will feature a case discussion exploring alternative approaches for grading class participation, combining grades for class participation and written work, and managing challenges of the fixed curve.
