To become eligible for an HBS Social Enterprise Summer Fellowship, students are required to submit with their application a signed letter from a senior executive of the host organization, addressed to the prospective Fellow and setting forth the actual job offer and the specifics of the position including:

  1. Specific project to be completed by the student
  2. Job responsibilities
  3. Other members of the project team (if any)
  4. Name, title, telephone number and fax number of project supervisor
  5. Level of administrative support available
  6. Human resources contact
  7. Facility and equipment resources allocated (office, computer, etc.)
  8. Starting date and ending date
  9. Number of weeks and hours per week
  10. Compensation (weekly)*
  11. Other terms and conditions of employment to be attached (if applicable): Copy of letter of determination of Section [501(C)(3)] status.

* Compensation: The majority of salaries from organizations have ranged from $600 – $1,000 per week. In addition to this salary commitment from organizations, students may apply for supplemental funding through the HBS Social Enterprise Summer Fellowship, which is awarded on a rolling, funds–available basis. We would expect organizations to pay $600–$1,000/week if possible. For those organizations who are unable to pay $600/week (and if students are applying for the Social Enterprise Summer Fellowship) we ask the organization to please supply additional information on the salary level in their sponsorship letter. Examples could include operating budget of organization; salary schedules for other graduate–school  interns or similar level employees in the organization; cost to organization if project was done on a consulting basis; or cost of living difference if organization is based in a developing country. This information will be reviewed carefully by the Selection Committee in the decision process.
