Summer Fellowship Program

Resources for the Summer Social Enterprise Job Search


Timing for typical Social Enterprise summer search

Fall - early winter - students defining goals and interests; identifying and contacting potential organizations

January - March - most nonprofit and public sector postings appear on Job Bank; bulk of interviewing with organizations (note that postings may appear through May, but students need to be aware of timing for summer fellowship applications)

February - April - most students start making summer employment decisions

early March - first summer fellowship deadline (Applications will be accepted for review on a rolling basis and decisions will be made on a funds-available basis throughout each period until all funds have been allocated.)

Some first steps

  • Spend some time outlining your goals and interests for the summer
  • Review the suggestions and resources on the SE Job search website
  • Review The Harvard Business School Guide to Careers in the Nonprofit Sector, by Stephanie Lowell (MBA '99), Harvard Business School Publishing, 2000 (available in the Coop or through HBS Publishing
  • See listings of past hiring organizations, read summaries of past summer internships, and get copies of full reports (available through Baker Library | Bloomberg Center)
    • Past Summer Experiences
    • Email or meet with past summer fellows to hear more about their experience
    • Read advice from past fellows on the ingredients to a successful summer experience
    • Read about alumni in the field (in The Harvard Business School Guide to Careers in the Nonprofit Sector and online)
    • Attend speakers presented by Social Enterprise Club and other related clubs
