This painting is from a series of large-scale automatist abstractions, new work on a scale that pushes the physical limits of gesture. Wood's grisaille canvases in shades of red, grey, yellow and black, maintain a cool stance. Belying their automatist roots, the paintings capture the immediacy and fluidity of their medium while retaining the objective detachment of scientific photographs.
The carefully prepared surfaces become the field for a complicated game of endurance. Looping skeins of paint are dragged, twisted, turned and folded into a multifaceted space that disguises the effort of its creation behind a mask of complexity. Wood's paintings have a slippery shifting glow as though possessed of an unseen and unfixed internal light source.
