I painted this when my interests centered on "Americana." My real subject matter was a populists notion of any individual creating art out of life. I had in mind a farm wife, perhaps, who looked at her surroundings and thought, "I can transcend this by making it all into art, can get closer to "heaven" if I build this tower."
