Alfredo Jaar's film Muxima (meaning heart in Kimbundu) is a melancholic lament, a cinematographic elegy dedicated to the people of Angola. Divided into ten Cantos, or short visual poems, the film is guided rhythmically and conceptually by five different versions of Muxima, a Kimbundu folk song that inspired it. Together, the Cantos comprise a work that is, as Jaar says, "about a woman named Muxima…about a Church named Muxima…about a popular Angolan song…and about none of the above."
