Zhang Hongtu includes Chinese characters in the surface decoration of his paintings, which have sources in ancient traditional art forms. He repaints classic Chinese ink paintings of the 16th century in the styles of different 19th century French or Dutch Impressionist masters - paintings that are contemporary only in their self-contradiction. The game is, of course, complicated by the fact that many of the Impressionists were, in fact, deeply influenced by Asian Art.
