A stonemason once told Studs Terkel that it was the irregularities of a structure that allowed you to see the influence of the individual human hand. I would add that the idiosyncratic also demonstrates a kind of intelligence that deserves celebration. I make pictures that perpetuate such sensibilities by paying particular attention to discrepancies of light, color, and context so that the individuality of each subject is readily evident.
