A single figure is relocated in every painting throughout the same room, so that although the individual image is still, a sense of cinematic motion pervades. While each panel is painted with an almost classical serenity, a deeply gothic and romantic foreboding is generated by the suggestion of a story being told as the ghostlike figure moves through the interior space, engaged in an enigmatic ritual. The interplay between the seeming realism of the interior and its furnishings, juxtaposed against the ethereal figure of a woman whose presence in the space feels imagined, creates a psychological tension for the viewer who is, at the same time, at ease and disturbed. — Michael Steinberg
