Brooks builds and photographs sheltering evironments in her continuing series, Constructed Comfort. The early works were straightforward depictions of blanket houses and cardboard forts. She shifted her focus from the constructions themselves to outward views photographed from within the structures. These photographs become sites for reverie, containment, isolation, perfection. By obscuring the focus of her gaze, Brooks depicts emotional states rather than actual places. The materials are intentionally ambiguous: cotton batting might appear to be snow, wooden dowels could be twigs, branches, or tent posts.
