What gives us confidence that value-based competition on results is possible, and not just a theoretical concept? The answer is that it has already started. A growing number of providers, health plans, employers, suppliers, and other system participants are moving to compete on value, some of whom we describe in Redefining Health Care. None of the strategies, operating practices, and policies we recommend is theoretical. Each of them is already being implemented, though no one organization is yet pursuing all of them.

Everyone can play a role in redefining health care. No altruism is required: moving to value-based competition will benefit every constituent in the system. Those who act early will benefit most.
