For most of medicine’s history, the average patient generated very little data. This is no longer the case. Now nearly every medical specialty is coping with massive increases in data volume. Super-exponential growth rates are increasingly common. Much of this increase in bytes comes from high quality digital imaging across specialties. This trend presents a series of data storage and management challenges that could change the landscape of parts of the IT industry including computing, storage, transmission, software, as well as industries like health care, insurance, and .coms.
