THE PURPOSE OF THIS CODING MANUAL
This manual was initially developed for use in the T.E.A.M. (Team Events and Motivation) Study at Harvard Business School (HBS) (Teresa M. Amabile, Principal Investigator). It was designed as a primary reference tool to aid coders in learning and using the DENA code scheme (Detailed Event Narrative Analysis) to do content analysis of the narratives written on the Daily Questionnaires in the T.E.A.M. Study. The DENA Coding Scheme is published as a separate document (Amabile, Mueller, & Archambault, 2003).
We hope that this manual, and DENA, will serve as a guide for other researchers who wish to adopt a methodology similar to ours. Although the research team members and database details referred to in this manual are specific to the T.E.A.M. Study and to Harvard Business School, we have tried to provide sufficient detail on the rationale for the scheme and its procedures to allow other researchers to design coding schemes and methodologies appropriate to their own needs. (The names of all participating companies, teams, and individuals have been disguised.)
This manual is intended as a supplement to, but not a replacement for, training and practice with the experienced coder.
