From the Managing Director
In recent weeks we welcomed the Classes of 2010 and 2011 to campus. The 1st year students are busy with classes and learning about their many career options; and the 2nd years are buzzing about their summer experiences. We anticipate another dynamic recruiting season and welcome ongoing communication from your organization to ensure a clear and consistent message to our students regarding your recruiting plans.
Recruiting State of Mind
The Classes of 2009 and 2010 have chosen a broader spectrum of industries than in years' past and we anticipate this trend of diversity will continue throughout the current recruiting season. It is noteworthy to mention that the number of students entering the Non-Profit sector increased 106%, Healthcare increased 88% and Manufacturing increased by 62%.
The sentiment on-campus remains optimistic. As observed throughout the first year students' Career & Professional Development Orientations, followed by our recent Networking Nights Event - the kick-off of 2nd year recruiting - the economic climate is not dampening students' optimism during their job search. We are excited to welcome companies to future on-campus events including our Dedicated Interview Periods, Company Information Days and Company Presentations and encourage those companies who are unable to be present on campus to post available opportunities in our Job Bank.
Class of 2009
While 83% of students had offers at graduation, our office continues to support members of the Class of 2009 who are still seeking employment. We have many resources available to our new alumni and are able to support them in their individual job searches; however there is no substitute for a solid job lead. To support the Class of 2009, please email 09careersupport@hbs.edu with any information, job leads or questions and our dedicated Class of 2009 liasion, Suzie Rubin, will follow up with you directly.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership with our office and interest in our students, in what we anticipate to be another challenging job market for both classes. We look forward to seeing many of you on campus or on the road in the coming months.

The Immersion Experience Program Expands
In 2010, HBS is pleased to offer our students 7 new IXP programs and expand offerings to March. The portfolio now offers 11 IXPs, including 8 international and 3 domestic programs. Whether traveling to India, China, Rwanda, New Orleans and more, IXPs offer off-campus, faculty-led programs committed to the pedagogy of experiential learning. The IXP goes beyond creating educated tourists. Instead, it facilitates the transmission of key ideas in managerial practice through field-based applied management projects and active learning exercises. The IXP maximizes students' academic experience by integrating the case method of teaching with active learning in the field. Summer Internship Spotlight
By Fereshteh Zeineddin MBA 2010
Having worked in the cosmetics industry prior to attending business school, I had always had a curiosity and interest in the luxury goods world. It was this curiosity that drew me towards a summer internship experience at LVMH in New York City. As an intern at Louis Vuitton North America, I not only gained a deeper understanding of the luxury goods industry, but was also able to put into practice the many lessons I had learnt from my first year of MBA studies at HBS.

I was hired to work with the Client Development team in Louis Vuitton's marketing department to create and implement client relationship management initiatives aimed at elevating the customer experience. After a few days of first-hand observation of Louis Vuitton's retail operations, I proposed a summer internship project to the executive team. Read More...
I saw a great need for a revamp and repositioning of the client book, an in-store tool used by managers and sales associates to capture client information and strengthen customer relations.
I was pleasantly surprised at how receptive the team was to my proposal. After all, the client book is a tool that is used by all associates and its re-launch would require a complete shift in behavior and retail culture. I found it extremely refreshing to be part of a company that, while rooted in timeless tradition and culture, was completely receptive to positive change.
One of the most valuable skills I gained from my first year at HBS was the ability to synthesize large amounts of data and present it in an effective and concise manner. I was able to put this skill into practice throughout this project. After completing global research and conducting national focus groups aimed at understanding the needs of store managers and associates, I synthesized the data and feedback and began to create the content. I then worked with the design studio on the client book format and layout. I really enjoyed being responsible for the entire project from project conception to the final creation of the book.
After my final project presentation, the executive team decided that the revamped client book would be launched across all retail stores across North America in early 2010. It was great to have the opportunity to work across departments on a project that had significant strategic impact on the company's operation while at the same time putting to use the skills that I had gained during my first year at HBS.

STUDENT PORTRAIT PROJECT

Umaimah Mendhro
My home-village, Akri, the place my father was born... is where I slept under mosquito net-covered handwoven beds and rode on ox-carts to nearby barren fields. Most in my village in Sindh, Pakistan are not literate. None know a place called Harvard.
My life in exile in the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia... is where I first felt alone. And thus appreciated the need to form, rather than absorb, beliefs. It's where I first dreamt of leaving a mark on this world. And living a life that tens of millions know of... that feels relevant, anchored and found.
Crossing some deserts, weathering some storms, I led my way to Harvard to be amongst you. You who helped me build a school in my home-village...a place for children to craft and realize purposeful dreams. Where they can learn to reason and judge for themselves. And do not what everyone does but what anyone should. A place that not only brought Harvard and Akri but also our respective countries together. A place where I found a future in my past.
