HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL LAUNCHES NEW EXECUTIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM ON OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE IN HEALTHCARE DELIVERY ORGANIZATIONS

June program will welcome senior leaders from hospital and other healthcare delivery organizations

BOSTON - Next month, senior executives from healthcare delivery organizations from the United States and abroad – including hospitals, health systems, and medical clinics – will participate in a new Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education program designed to provide senior clinical and non-clinical executives with the leadership skills, management knowledge, and tools to optimize medical and financial outcomes, organizational performance, and competitiveness.

The five-day program, Healthcare Delivery: Achieving Organizational Excellence, combines multimedia cases, classroom exercises, small-group discussions, guest speakers from across the University including the Harvard School of Public Health, and exposure to the latest research to enable participants to study topics and trends within the rapidly changing healthcare delivery environment. While the program’s curriculum focuses on three core topics – leadership in a complex environment, organizational excellence, and new service delivery models – participants will also examine best practices in specific areas such as information technology, quality assurance, and human resources.

“The increasingly complex nature of health care and the healthcare industry requires innovative management thinking and practices,” said Dr. Richard Bohmer, associate professor of business administration and the faculty chair of the program. “Today medical outcomes are as much a function of organizational performance as they are of individual performance. Developing an understanding of the determinants of organizational effectiveness in a healthcare setting is important for executives and care providers alike.”

The Healthcare Delivery program, which will take place from June 11-16, is part of the Healthcare Initiative at HBS, a multidisciplinary effort dedicated to innovative thinking in the healthcare industry. Launched in 2005, the Initiative brings together Harvard Business School’s extensive research, thought leadership, and interest in the business and management of healthcare.

The teaching team for the Healthcare Delivery program includes HBS faculty who are renowned for their involvement in the healthcare and business fields and who have led research in the areas of organizational behavior, managed care, medical management performance, and organizational change and transformation. The core faculty team includes:

  • Associate Professor Richard M.J. Bohmer
  • Professor Amy C. Edmondson
  • Professor Regina E. Herzlinger
  • Associate Professor Robert S. Huckman
  • Professor F. Warren McFarlan
Admission to the program is based on professional achievement and organizational responsibility. For more information or to apply online visit www.exed.hbs.edu/programs/hcd.
