John C. Whitehead, Distinguished Alumnus, Business Leader, and Statesman, Speaks on Campus

BOSTON -- In a March 2 talk cosponsored by the Harvard Business School Social Enterprise, Real Estate and Finance Clubs, John C. Whitehead (MBA '47), former Co-Chair of Goldman Sachs and Deputy Secretary of State during the Reagan Administration, outlined the challenges of being a leader in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Whitehead, who currently serves as chair of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, told more than 200 students that "What you learn here will be applicable to all parts of life, no matter what you do over the next 50 years. The skills of leaders are needed everywhere."

In 1993, Whitehead helped found HBS's Social Enterprise Initiative, a broad-based program of teaching, research, and other activities involving faculty, students, and alumni and focusing on the leadership and management of not-for-profit organizations. He created the John C. Whitehead Fund for Not-for-Profit Management at the School in 1995 to provide ongoing support for the Initiative.

"Students led the way with the Social Enterprise Initiative," Whitehead said. "Because they really wanted it and helped it to grow, Social Enterprise at HBS will celebrate its tenth anniversary next month."
