Career Focus
International Entrepreneurship (IE) is a practical course for students who may someday start, join, or hold a stake in an international entrepreneurial venture. In addition, one of the newly emphasized themes of IE will be that of the global entrepreneur, in recognition of the fact that increasingly ventures are global from inception, and opportunities, resources, uncertainties, customers, and exits can come from anywhere, anytime. Thus, IE is targeted toward aspiring international and US-based entrepreneurs, and their investors.
Course Content and Organizational Objectives
IE examines how entrepreneurs (a) create and manage emerging ventures in other countries, and (b) create and manage start-ups/emerging ventures which are global in at least one important aspect. IE is a general management course in the sense that the case analyses and classroom discussions draw on and integrate multidisciplinary concepts, skills, and insights - marketing, operations, finance, control, decision-making, leadership, ethics, governance, negotiation - all in the service of starting and managing entrepreneurial ventures. IE will also include some skill building exercises.
Specific topics include: opportunity identification and assessment; business models for international startups; venture valuation; sources of financing; deal structuring; cross-cultural issues in global entrepreneurship; creating strategic alliances; managing/leading a small, multinational organization; international acquisitions; managing entrepreneurial ventures in situations of financial distress and under changing contexts; and managing global expansion of ventures.
