In recognition of the critical need for leaders who are educated in the intellectual disciplines and practices of dentistry and management, Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and Harvard Business School (HBS) established an MBA/DMD program in 2009.

The program's mission is to develop outstanding dentist leaders, skilled in both dentistry and management, to take positions of influence through which they will contribute substantially to the health and well-being of individuals and society.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum of the joint MBA/DMD program is rigorously grounded in fundamental management concepts—including strategy, economics, finance, marketing, operations, and more—and the core science disciplines of dentistry, such as oral medicine, pathophysiology, and related studies. Further, the MBA/DMD is designed as an integrated curriculum, rather than simply a sequence of MBA classes added to the standard dentistry education. The opportunity to combine these disciplines drives the enthusiasm of faculty and the ambitions of degree candidates.

Admission

Applicants interested in the MBA/DMD Program apply to HBS and apply to HSDM separately and are selected independently. When applying, students must identify their interest in the joint degree program.

While each school will maintain its separate admissions timetables, all applicants interested in the joint degree program are required to apply to HBS in the first two of three rounds. All applicants interested in the joint degree program are required to apply to HSDM by the December deadline.

Students who are currently enrolled in the first or second year of the HSDM DMD Program will be considered for the joint MBA/DMD Program only if they have completed the additional course and summer internship requirements on a "current" basis and according to the timetable prescribed for students already admitted to the joint program. Once a student has been admitted to and enrolled in the joint MBA/DMD program, the student must complete both degrees successfully in order to achieve graduation from Harvard.

Tuition and Financial Aid

In Years 1, 2, and 3 of the MBA/DMD program, students are registered at HSDM pursuing core medical curricular requirements and pay full HSDM tuition and fees. Students apply to the HSDM Financial Aid Office for financial aid in these years and follow standard HSDM financial aid policies and procedures.

In Year 4, students are registered at HBS pursuing the MBA Required Curriculum and pay full HBS tuition and fees. Students apply to the HBS Financial Aid Office for financial aid in Year 4 and follow standard HBS financial aid policies.

In Year 5, students' primary school of enrollment is HSDM, and students pay HSDM full-year tuition and fees. Students apply to the HSDM Financial Aid Office for financial aid in Year 5.

Students in the joint degree program will be limited to a total of five years of financial aid from HSDM and HBS toward the MBA/DMD degrees.
