Taking over his father’s outdoor advertising company in 1963, he immediately began expanding it beyond its core billboard business, acquiring Atlanta television’s Channel 17. Securing programming from national networks, showing “light hearted” fanfare to contrast the bleakness of news, and obtaining satellite beaming service, the network that came to be known as TBS was soon thriving, reaching more that 2 million homes. Turner’s news brainchild, CNN, unveiled in 1980, was also a huge success, providing the public with what some call the only “real news.”
