Mellon was responsible for the reorganization of the financial structure of Mellon enterprises. He consolidated several family-managed companies, the most significant of which was the merger of two competing Mellon institutions – the Mellon National bank and the Union Trust Company. Its surplus and capital of $157 million made it the 16th largest bank in the United States.
