Doubleday focused his efforts on the mass production and distribution of inexpensive books. In 1934, Doubleday purchased full ownership of the Literary Guild of America, a book club that generated sales of 1 million books a year. Under Doubleday’s leadership, Doubleday and Company had emerged by 1947 as the largest publishing house in the nation with annual sales over $30 million. Doubleday was a keen manager who readily terminated unprofitable enterprises and embraced modern advertising techniques and market strategies.
