Wessner landed ServiceMaster’s first hospital services contract that became the foundation for the company’s rapid growth. ServiceMaster eventually provided maintenance and housekeeping services for over 1,300 hospitals and nursing homes. He also launched the company’s biomedical equipment maintenance and home healthcare business lines. Wessner achieved such strong financial results that Fortune named ServiceMaster the best performing service business over a ten-year period from 1974 to 1984.
