Lilly, a trained pharmacist and the founder of the family drug manufacturer, set up the first scientific division in the company and focused on standards of manufacturing and scientific development. Among other products, the company assisted in the development of insulin and was a pioneer in the marketing of pharmaceuticals. During World War II, the company supplied the U.S. government with more than 250 different pharmaceutical products.
