In 1952, the year of Ballantine Books' founding, Ballantine introduced four titles, including Executive Suite by Cameron Hawley, which became a bestseller and a successful motion picture. Ballantine proved to the publishing industry that substantial profits could be made from publishing science fiction in soft cover. J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth science fiction series was one of Ballantine Books all-time greatest sellers.
