Batten took the helm of his family’s newspaper empire in the late sixties and continued to enhance its scale and scope over three decades, yet his greatest achievement was the launch of a phenomenally successful cable channel. In 1982, Batten launched The Weather Channel and though it struggled for a few years, it soon became a hallmark of cable television and grew in size and market reach as cable technology expanded nationally and internationally.
