Lorenzo took over the fledgling Texas International Airways in 1972 and through major acquisitions including Continental Airlines, he built it into one of the country’s largest airline carriers. Lorenzo was skillful at managing government relationships which enabled him to capitalize on the early deregulation of the airline industry. Lorenzo is known as much for being an early pioneer of deep discount airfares as he is for being an extremely tough, cost conscious labor manager.
