Upjohn played an instrumental role in supporting legislation requiring pharmaceutical companies to prove a drug’s effectiveness in clinical trials prior to its general release. A physician by training, Upjohn established the Medical Division of the company in 1937. During his tenure as CEO, he enabled Upjohn to double both revenues and earnings, taking sales from $82 million to $165 million and net income from $9 million to $22 million.
