After making a name for himself at Ford and later at Hughes, Thornton left to start an electronics company. Litton Industries had its roots in electronics but the company became a huge conglomerate, operating in a wide variety of businesses, from oil drilling rigs to trading stamps. Growing the firm through 25 acquisitions, by 1961, Thornton had amassed 48 plants with revenues of $245 million.
