A talented engineer, Stanley spearheaded numerous technological innovations in the production and refining of metals at International Nickel (Inco) and continued to grow the company through expansion, taking advantage of low asset prices during the Great Depression. Able to maintain its monopoly position by officially becoming a Canadian company, under Stanley’s leadership, Inco was able to become the world’s largest nickel company, producing 90% of the world’s nickel in 1951.
