Siebert made history in 1967 by becoming the first woman to own a seat on the New York Stock Exchange; she remained the only woman with this distinction for a decade. Siebert dramatically expanded her brokerage in 1975 by offering discounted services to her customers; discounting had previously been reserved for large commercial clients. Siebert left her business for five years to become the Superintendent of Banks for the state of New York; another first for a woman. Siebert returned to her firm in 1983 and built it, once again, into one of the nation’s leading discount brokerage firms.
