A trained chemical engineer, Jacobson joined 3M’s Scotch tape laboratory in 1947. In his many years with 3M, he encouraged research and innovation and developed 3M’s presence in such new fields as magnetic-media. Between 1986 and 1991, Jacobson grew revenue from $8.6 billion to $13 billion and income from $779 million to $1.3 billion.
