Soon after assuming the presidency, Wriston built Citibank into the nation’s second largest bank in terms of total assets. He was instrumental in the convergence of Citibank and the First National City Corporation (Citicorp) which by 1976 doubled of the bank’s overall asset base. It was also under his watch that Citibank became an innovator in technology by introducing some of the first automatic teller machines in the nation.
