Reed is credited with building Citicorp into one of the most powerful and significant financial institutions in the United States. His command of the operational aspects of the business enabled him to create a lean and efficient organization. Through a heavy focus on automation and technology (one of the first to proliferate ATMs) and through shrewd cost management, Reed posted stellar financial returns which set the stage for the firm's eventual merger with The Travelers Group.
