Zukor independently built numerous theatres in major United States cities. Because of the popularity of these theatres, he began to invest heavily in movie production, convinced that big-name actors in large movies would be the future of the picture industry. Paramount Pictures, the culmination of these investments, produced dozens of highly successful films. In 1949, Paramount was forced to divest itself of the theatre chain business, but an undaunted Zukor moved on to his next challenge, capitalizing on the growing television industry, and building Paramount into a Hollywood production conglomerate.
