Manager, Network Operations Services
Staff member since: 1997
Background: Retail Information Systems and Telecommunications; Banking.
Came to HBS because: When I decided to come to HBS I was in the middle of a crossroads of opportunity: continue down the path of Retail Management Information Systems (MIS), or take a chance at HBS to move into the area of network services. After a lot of thinking and an incident involving a book dropped on the head of a headhunter (which is another story!), I chose HBS.
Main responsibilities: I work to support and improve the Network Services infrastructure. Whether that means campus connectivity, construction planning, procurement, budgeting, customer support, or troubleshooting, it all falls under my team's role in keeping our promise of a robust and reliable array of network services, and moving these services forward.
Not that any day is typical, but what might you do during a given day?
My day is a good mix of operational support and working on project tasks. There is an interesting variety to each day. I'll go from planning an infrastructure improvement to purchasing the latest and greatest networking gear to looking into a question about security policy.
What do you like best about working in the HBS IT Group?
This campus is full of smart, fascinating, and good-hearted folks. It is a place I feel at home both professionally and personally.
How have you developed professionally since joining the IT Group?
I feel I've grown tremendously as my skills have evolved with the needs of the school. I have had the good fortune to have been able to fulfill multiple roles within ITG. Each role required new knowledge and provided new experience. The breadth of technologies encompassed by the IT Group has allowed me to gain skills and confidence in many disciplines.
What does it take to succeed here?
Helping others. You will build great relationships with the people here at HBS as you use your skills to help them succeed.
What might surprise people about the IT Group?
The extent of the school's commitment to information technology as a lever for change and as a focus for the development of how we provide an unique learning experience.
