Why do you want to work in the healthcare industry?
The healthcare sector presents unique challenges and opportunities. It requires balancing the interests of numerous stakeholders ranging from doctors and patients to managers and investors. As a former scientist, I love scientific discovery. But even more fascinating than academic lab work, and an even bigger challenge, is bringing life-saving technologies to market. This requires an understanding of science and medicine, but also a clear and well defined business model that can bring technologies to patients in ways that are profitable and hence sustainable. The complexity is a huge draw for me.
HBS made my desire to work in healthcare stronger. The resources in healthcare at HBS are tremendous and I am now even more aware and excited about the opportunities that exist in the healthcare space.
What kind of advantage do you think having an MBA will give you in the healthcare industry?
Because of its complexity, the world of healthcare is often split into doctors and scientists on the one hand and business people on the other. Having an MBA with a healthcare oriented focus will allow me to understand the perspectives of both scientists and business people while reconciling their different interests in a productive way.
The healthcare network at HBS is incredibly strong. There is a dedicated core of students with a passion for healthcare, many of whom will no doubt find success in the field. I have been able to build relationships with my healthcare classmates that are strong. These relationships will be a tremendous asset as a future healthcare investor and entrepreneur.
What made you decide to pursue your MBA at HBS?
HBS provides the perfect balance between providing a broad general management education and specialization in particular area of interest. I was able to pursue my passion for healthcare through the fantastic set of course offerings in the second year of the program. I was also able to build relationships with leading healthcare practitioners. What is unique about HBS is that these healthcare opportunities are combined with the broad suite of general business courses in areas ranging from leadership to finance.
“HBS provides the perfect balance between a broad general management education and specialization in a particular area of interest.”
