How well do you feel HBS has prepared you for the healthcare industry?

HBS provides us with the managerial and analytical skills necessary to assume leadership roles in order to make a positive and lasting impact upon patients, doctors, nurses, and the companies and products who serve them. HBS has given me the framework and language to communicate with different stakeholders, and to enable better decision making processes.

Why would you recommend HBS for someone who wants to work in the healthcare industry?

There is a wide selection of healthcare courses. HBS gives you the flexibility to build expertise yet branch outside your industry and comfort zone. There are also many opportunities to partner with companies in the summer and during the second year through internships, field studies, and fellowships. To me, HBS feels like a community and a home. My favorite memories of HBS are the conversations I've had with thoughtful professors and fellow students about aspects of the healthcare system, its challenges, and potential solutions.

What advice would you give to prospective students with a similar educational/employment background?

Create your own path and journey. Meet with faculty and students who have similar interests. Be curious. Ask questions. Explore potential solutions. Seek out opportunities to develop your own skills while simultaneously helping others. As part of a field study, for example, I designed and taught a new course on healthcare economics to Harvard undergraduate students to facilitate the dissemination of ideas and frameworks from the MBA level to college students. I have also enjoyed helping local non-profits and assisting classmates with their healthcare start-ups. At HBS, everyone has something to offer.
