Innovation in Tradition: Rural Livelihood Creation in the Indian Craft Sector
By: Mukti Khaire, Shashank Shah and Kundan Madireddy
Abstract
This publication is a study of the Indian Crafts Sector. It is an outcome of the team's research, engagement, and interactions with over 75 crafts enterprises across India. It documents the research process, insights generated, the impact, and policy recommendations for the sector. A narrative of experiences with the organizations visited across ten states of India is included as a travelogue. Also featured are detailed profiles of the six enterprises that won Social Innovation Grants through the project. Throughout the different narratives, several themes arise: the deep commitment to artisans and crafts of the leaders running these organizations as well as the importance of community-based engagement and various non-government actors in building the Indian crafts eco-system. Above all, the voice of the artisan is present throughout the narrative.
