Veolia: Resourcing the World

Abstract
In March 2016, Antoine Frérot, CEO of Veolia, a global environmental services provider, was undergoing an important transformation of the company. In 2013, Frérot presented a growth strategy that focused on increasing the share of industrial clients, enhancing growth from non-European geographies, and developing innovative multi-business contracts that required the three lines of business in Veolia to work together as “One Veolia”. These were significant changes for Veolia which had historically served municipalities more than industrial customers, had grown dominantly through its European presence, and had adopted a decentralized structure with individual business units serving the water, waste, energy, and transportation industries. The use of a business model where, instead of working under simple build and operate contracts, Veolia aligned with customers through risk and value-sharing contracts, was novel as well. Further, all of this was to be accomplished in the context of a changing market and intense competition.
